31st Colloquium of the IGU Commission on the Sustainability of Rural Systems in Mendoza 2024

The forthcoming IGU CSRS colloquium centres on the topic „Contested rural spaces / Territorios rurales en disputa,“ providing a platform for deliberations on various perspectives concerning advancements in rural systems, with specific focus on the disputed aspect of the ‚territory‘ concept in Latin America.

This conference aims to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of these concepts, which are crucial for the sustainable transformation of rural systems. Scholars are urged to examine the interplay of external factors and individuals‘ internal worlds, in line with the call for a comprehensive approach to sustainable actions. This study will investigate the complex relationship between territory, soil, attachment to place, and subsistence. It will focus on renewing concepts and comprehending resistance in various global communities. The thematic sessions cover critical sub-themes such as regional productions/ecologies, rural-urban conflicts, socio-environmental disparities, and land ownership. Thus, these sessions serve as a platform for extensive discussions on these issues.

Further the IGU CSRS colloquia inclued a three-day field trip to show conflicts and transformations. For this colloquium the regionas of Valle de Uco and Malargüe have been selected as destination. The field trip from 18.-20. September.

The colloquium is held in the City of Mendoza, hosted by the Departamento e Instituto de Geografía of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Abstracts can be submitted until March 1st 2024.
